Batston & coworkers
(1999)
Ss were given a chance to
perform an interesting task & a chance to win a raffle ticket towards $30
or a dull task with no rewards.
Ss had to assign
themselves to one of the tasks & a supposed second S to the other task.
1 in 20 Ss believed
assigning themselves to the positive task was the most moral thing to do, yet
80 % did.
Greed won over
morality!!!!!
The discrepancy between
attitudes and actions are referred to as moral hypocrisy.
Moral hypocrisy - We want to
“appear” moral, even if we don’t act that way.
